With the arrival of summer, Lanzarote and La Graciosa are filled with life, encounters, and people who choose our islands to enjoy their free time. But we cannot forget that, for many LGTBIQ+ people, continuing to live their sexual orientation, gender identity, or expression freely remains a challenge in too many spaces.
Although important progress has been made in rights in recent years, reality shows us that LGTBIQ+ people continue to face situations of discrimination, violence, and hate speech. That is why we make a clear call to citizens, public administrations, the leisure sector, and society as a whole to continue building safe, inclusive spaces free from any form of LGTBIfobia.
From the Secretariat of LGTBIQ+ Policies of Socialist Youth of Lanzarote and La Graciosa, we believe it is essential to firmly defend the values of democracy, equality, and respect. Human rights are not an opinion or a trend: they are the basis of a free and just society. And that is why our islands must continue to be a benchmark for coexistence, diversity, and respect. We want those who visit us, and also those who live here all year round, to be able to enjoy the summer being who they are, without fear and with full freedom.
We claim the role of public institutions, the educational community, the associative fabric, and the leisure sector in continuing to build safe and inclusive spaces, where no one has to hide who they are for fear of rejection or violence. In the face of hatred and intolerance, we respond with more rights, more education in diversity, and more democratic commitment.
Because showing ourselves as we are should never be an act of bravery, but a guaranteed right. We firmly believe that we can define Lanzarote and La Graciosa as plural, diverse, and proud islands, very proud!
From Socialist Youth of Lanzarote and La Graciosa, we renew our commitment to the defense of the rights of the LGTBIQ+ community, especially young people, and we will continue working so that no one sees their freedom limited for being who they are or for loving whom they love.
This summer, we call for enjoying our festivals, beaches, and public spaces with respect and coexistence. Because Pride does not end in June: it is defended 365 days a year.
Against hate, more rights. Against discrimination, more equality. Against fear, more pride.
This summer, let's fill Lanzarote and La Graciosa with pride, respect, diversity, and equality.
