Canarian Liberation Lanzarote Proposal to plan a new health center
Playa Honda needs a health response in line with its population, social, and urban reality. It is about accepting an evident fact, Playa Honda is a town that has grown steadily for decades and cannot continue to depend on limited, insufficient health infrastructure conditioned by a space that no longer meets current primary care needs.
Liberación Canaria Lanzarote raises the need to initiate serious, coordinated, and viable planning to provide Playa Honda with a new health center.
This proposal requires the orderly involvement of the San Bartolomé City Council, the Cabildo of Lanzarote, and the Government of the Canary Islands, especially regarding the availability of land, financing, health equipment, accessibility, parking, and definition of the service portfolio.
In 1991, Playa Honda had approximately 3,000 inhabitants. Currently, it exceeds 10,000. This demographic growth has not been accompanied by equivalent health infrastructure, which has generated increasing pressure on the current local clinic, located at Calle San Borondón, s/n.
Primary care must be dimensioned according to the real population and the foreseeable evolution of each nucleus, not from parameters overcome by the passage of time.
The current clinic has limitations for a town of these dimensions. Maintenance deficiencies, space limitations, facility problems, and difficulties in expanding the building due to its current location condition the attention and provision of services.
This situation causes part of the population of Playa Honda to have to travel to other health centers, such as the Titerroy health center, to receive services that should be resolved more closely and efficiently.
Territorial equity in access to public services must be a basic principle of any responsible health policy.
The population of Playa Honda contributes like the rest of the citizens and has the right to primary care dimensioned according to its real needs. The lack of adequate space hinders the full deployment of services related to the improvement of Primary and Community Care, including the +AP strategy promoted in the Canary Islands.
Therefore, Liberación Canaria proposes that the municipal plot located on Mástil street, bordering Anzuelo and Boya streets, be studied as a priority as a possible location for the new health center.
It is a space that, due to its location, accessibility, connection with main roads, and parking possibilities, could meet adequate conditions to house a modern, functional health facility prepared to serve the current and future population of Playa Honda.
This proposal must be approached practically, that is, identify available land, evaluate its technical suitability, define healthcare needs, coordinate institutional competencies, guarantee funding, and establish an execution timeline.
Public healthcare cannot depend on provisional solutions when demographic reality shows that Playa Honda needs a healthcare infrastructure with greater capacity.
The objective must be for Playa Honda to have a 21st-century health center, well-located, accessible, functional, and prepared to offer close, preventive, and quality care.
The plot on Mástil street deserves to be studied rigorously because it can offer a viable, orderly, and generally beneficial solution.
Liberación Canaria Lanzarote considers that this matter must be incorporated into the institutional agenda with responsibility and planning. It is not enough to acknowledge the problem. It is necessary to activate a concrete roadmap that includes a technical study of the land, a report on healthcare needs, coordination with the Canary Islands Health Service, budgetary provision, and a temporal commitment to execution.
Playa Honda must have public services in line with its population size and its role within the municipality of San Bartolomé. Investing in primary care is not just about building a building. It is about improving prevention, reducing unnecessary travel, dignifying healthcare, and reinforcing the population's quality of life.
From Liberación Canaria Lanzarote, we defend a realistic, useful proposal oriented towards the general interest, such as planning a necessary and urgent new health center for Playa Honda and studying the plot on Mástil street as an ideal location to provide a stable response to a need that can no longer be postponed.
