Paulino: Fear is our enemy

January 22 2014 (20:01 WET)

Paulino Rivero's statements, as president of the Canary Islands, to the Cope network on Tuesday, January 21, give a glimpse - through himself - of the very character of Canarian politics with the Spanish state. A burden of fear, disguised as servility and alignment with Spanish nationalism, once again leaves the Canary Islands orphaned of representation.

While the pressures from other nations that make up the Spanish state are becoming stronger, this compatriot of ours fills his mouth with understanding of the PP's concerns about maintaining the unity of Spain, even though he recognizes that "it is an old problem", but without failing to advise to make an "x-ray and delve deeper into each case".

The saddest thing is that, despite the fact that Rivero's party in the Canary Islands calls itself "Canarian nationalist", in Madrid it is more of an ally to Spanish nationalism than the threat posed by other nationalists and, therefore, the pressure exerted from various territories of the State does not exist in the Canarian representation, which - believe it - is limited to asking as a bargaining chip, but without raising its voice, for "tact" and "integrative measures that allow strengthening the cohesion of the Canary Islands with the State, incentivizing, for example, the reduction of prices of airline tickets".

Personally, I feel ashamed, but in this case I cannot say that it is "someone else's shame". This time I am fully aware that this spokesperson and his party are there because my People have voted for them and, therefore, their representation is legitimized by the current electoral system and the Spanish administrative imposition.

As part of the Canarian People, I assume the shame of who has won that electoral majority. What does not mean that I will stop directing my efforts to unmask so much cowardice and to make Canarians aware that they have to vote in Canarian, but not like this.
