Open letter to Minister Ribera

June 20 2020 (19:59 WEST)

Dear Minister:

As a Canarian regional deputy for the Sí Podemos Canarias Group, I am writing to you to reiterate a request that has become a clamor within the citizens of the Canary Islands: the State Government must urgently apply the Law and, consequently, halt the environmental outrage that is taking place on La Tejita Beach in Tenerife.

As you well know, the confluence of Sí Podemos Canarias (Podemos, Sí Se Puede and Equo) is part of the Government of the Canary Islands, as Unidas Podemos is part of the state coalition Government; in both cases, we have publicly positioned ourselves in defense of the territory and our biodiversity, against the excesses and abuses against the environment, which for decades have been taking place on the Canarian coasts, with successive governments of Coalición Canaria.

In this matter, all local, island, regional and state institutions have had or have some degree of responsibility.

And those decisions, appealed and denounced, that allow a company to build next to the shore of one of the few remaining virgin beaches on the island of Tenerife, in a flagrant attack against the environment, against the rights of all citizens, those decisions are still waiting for an urgent review by your Ministry, of the new maritime-terrestrial delimitation as well as the fixing of the corresponding easement zone.

Once your Ministry complies, Councilor José Antonio Valbuena and the Granadilla City Council would have to act to put order to these excesses, halting the work, removing the opaque fence that prevents the circulation of sand, and proposing to the project the new requirements derived from current legislation.

Being part of these governments makes us, in part, co-responsible for their decisions. That is why we insist that inaction and silence are not a response that we can admit.

Canarian society values its territory and biodiversity as a precious asset.

And that is why we mobilize, when our fragile island territory is attacked.

A Government that is committed to the fight against climate change, to sustainability, to a change in the productive model by diversifying our economy, cannot look the other way in the face of citizens' demands for attacks on the environment.

You, Minister, as the competent authority, have the obligation to stop any attack against the environment, any deterioration of a protected natural space, any invasion of the territory, belonging to the common of the citizens and destined for the use and enjoyment of all.

Awaiting an urgent resolution, greetings.

Manuel Marrero Morales

Spokesperson for the Sí Podemos Canarias Parliamentary Group
