Open letter from Pedro San Ginés to the senator of Lanzarote

"Mr. Senator, note that although almost everything you say in relation to oil exploration is false, I am not even going to refute it"...

June 11 2014 (16:24 WEST)

Mr. Senator, note that although almost everything you say in relation to oil exploration is false, I am not even going to refute it. Okay, let's assume you are right, that CC and PSOE were always in favor of exploration and have radically changed their minds.

Well, even if that were the case, what I cannot agree with is that your massive rejection of exploration is not due to your own convictions. Do not disrespect the people you represent any further, we already had enough with Mr. Soria's "batucada and sandwiches" to begin with.

The rejection is real, from all political and apolitical colors, it is popular, and it is massive. In short, Mr. Senator, what I am trying to tell you is that rectifying is wise and even you can and should do it. I believe that this town and I myself have been too condescending with you and what the figure of a Senator represents in the Spanish institutional framework, for being the only guaranteed territorial representation that Lanzarote has in the country.

That is, in the upper house it is you and no one but you who represents and can represent Lanzarote, or rather who should do it, although also in the lower house is the deputy Francisco Cabrera, but he does not exclusively represent Lanzarote like you.

You know perfectly well that all the municipalities of Lanzarote and its Island Government oppose these explorations; you know that two years ago, on March 24, 2012, the first major popular expression in the history of this Island took place; you know that opinion polls endorse Lanzarote's massive rejection of this industry; and that last Saturday, for the third time, in a demonstration, in whose call the public administrations have remained on the sidelines, Lanzarote has once again given you a resounding and forceful mandate.

Have courage and disassociate yourself as others in the PP in Lanzarote have already done, and if you are simply deeply mistaken and act out of your own conviction, then have respect for this people, for its popular expression and for the institutions that represent it, and defend the interests and the aforementioned mandate that the population of this island is giving you.

In short, knowing as you know what Lanzarote thinks, to whom you owe yourself, put your obligation and the island before your party, and be consistent with the position you hold or abandon it. For my part, as the highest responsible for the Island Government, the coddling is over and I demand that you do so now. As a citizen I reproach you for not representing us, as a neighbor and countryman I beg you to reconsider, and as a "friend" I advise you not to do this to yourself and not to turn your back on your people, or it will be your people who will eventually turn their back on you.

* (Although we have enough confidence and we were also born in the same neighborhood, on this occasion, you will allow me to address you in this open letter in the third person because of your status as senator of Lanzarote).

Pedro San Ginés Gutiérrez, president of the Cabildo of Lanzarote.
