It is not easy to sit in front of a blank page to try to express the emotions that this first year without Alexis leaves us. It is almost a feeling of orphanhood, a mixture between the incomprehensible, the difficult to assume, a sadness to which a reality so often so cruel pushes us. However, it has also been a year in which to renew daily the sincere and courageous commitment acquired by our beloved Alexis with San Bartolomé in that month of May 2019 in which the PSOE won, by overwhelming majority and under the leadership of this young companion, the municipal elections.
Alexis left us a lot, so many things that it is absolutely impossible to express them in these lines. This year of absence is, paradoxically, a year of firm presence. In each of the 365 days since November 15, 2021, in everything that this City Council, this Government Group, has done in the municipality of San Bartolomé, Alexis has been present, in one way or another.
Today I want to remember, again, the friend who embarked us on this exciting adventure, that enormous example of perseverance and coherence with whom we started this path full of passion. He was that companion whose firm defense of democratic values demonstrated that political activity is an honorable and dignified work. The purity and transparency of his ideas, his enormous capacity to manage and materialize everything he proposed have made Alexis a reference for socialism, municipalism and politics in capital letters in the Canary Islands.
I will never find enough words of gratitude for the opportunity that the experience of learning by his side, together with the best companion and friend, the best captain, always with a fixed course, has been. Alexis's ability to articulate teams has paid off, something I can see after more than three years of being part of the best human group possible. He set a way of working that we have very present every day in the work we do from the Municipal Government Group of San Bartolomé. He left us a marked north, a north that points to the progressive values that he defended tooth and nail, convinced that a more social, more sustainable and more supportive San Bartolomé was possible.
One year after his death, we can say that every advance that this municipality experiences, however small, every achievement, every small social conquest is an act of justice with San Bartolomé but also a new tribute to Alexis, a sign of respect for his memory, his wishes and an act of coherence with the project with which, from his hand, we began this mandate. From the enormous responsibility that I assumed with honor after his death, I can affirm that his mark will remain indelible, in this municipality and on the island of Lanzarote. It is the mark left by a good man, the best companion, the best friend.
