I want an egalitarian country

November 3 2019 (20:22 WET)

Like millions of women in every corner of Spain, I want an egalitarian country and my commitment is to be able to contribute to achieving it from the Congress of Deputies. Because autonomy and economic independence are essential for women's freedom, like my colleagues, I will continue working to advance the content of the Socialist Bill to guarantee equal treatment and opportunities between women and men in employment and occupation. These are not well-intentioned words, since it is necessary to guarantee the conditions of access, permanence and promotion of women in the labor market and to influence the wage gap.

Equality also means eradicating sexist violence. For this reason, we will deepen compliance with the State Pact against Gender Violence, also taking into account the different realities of women. Thus, we will pay special attention and design specific measures for women in rural areas, where sexist violence is more frequently silenced or invisible. And, also, due to their greater vulnerability, for those women who suffer from some disability, for older women, those from ethnic minorities and immigrants. Similarly, we will promote the approval of a comprehensive law for equal treatment and non-discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity.

In case anyone doubts it, deepening equality of course involves reforming the Penal Code. The PSOE is committed to modifying the classification of sexual offenses to give the absence of consent its proper treatment. On the one hand, to guarantee that the lack of explicit consent of the victim is key in sexual crimes: if a woman doesn't say yes, everything else is no. And, on the other hand, we will eliminate the crime of sexual abuse, which does not adequately convey the coercive nature inherent in all sexual behavior that is imposed on another person.

If the Spanish people give us their trust, we will approve a comprehensive law against trafficking in human beings for the purpose of sexual exploitation, which will contemplate the establishment of adequate mechanisms for its prevention and prosecution, will avoid the advertising of services with sexual content, and will reinforce the services and programs of social protection and comprehensive recovery of people who have been exploited, with specific attention to minors. And, finally, we will promote the reform of the Gender Identity Law, eliminating the requirements linked to medical diagnoses and facilitating the change of the registry mention to the sex and name of minors under 16 years of age.

In Lanzarote, La Graciosa and any other corner of Spain, the challenges for women are the same: equal treatment and opportunities between women and men in employment and occupation. #Ahora España
