"I know you may not understand it"

June 12 2019 (14:25 WEST)

After the elections of May 26 and seeing the result that the polls have yielded, it has been necessary to negotiate, dialogue, reach consensus and decide.

I guarantee that the decision has not been easy, and the democratic game puts the post-election agreement on the political stage when there are no absolute majorities. I am sure that we have achieved the best combination, regardless of the fact that a PP-PSOE pact on the island of Lanzarote may generate confusion, but there are also opportunities for this, to see if this union has been worthwhile or not, if we are really capable of giving the corporation and the island itself the stability, transparency and impetus it needs.

It is also true that we could not miss the opportunity to regenerate the first institution, to open doors and windows to the residents of Lanzarote and La Graciosa. After 10 years with the doors and windows "locked", the time has come to put the Cabildo at the disposal of the citizens, to serve the citizens again.

We have chosen a traveling companion that a priori may seem unnatural, incompatible and incomprehensible to some, but we must go further and take a long look, be mature in thought, in attitude and act by putting the interests of our islands before partisan interests. On many occasions I have heard that "politicians do not agree" and many others that it is not a matter of right or left but of putting this island on the path of progress, on the path of growth, leaving aside the tension, the confrontation, the revenge and turn towards the governability, the stability and the future of a land thirsty for investment and anchored in the 20th century in infrastructures and services.

From the Popular Party we are committed to a stable and lasting pact, which is born with the firm vocation to remain the four years of mandate and respond to the need for change that citizens are also asking for. What is clear to us is that we are going to leave our skin to lay the foundations for the future of Lanzarote and La Graciosa, which they already deserve; protecting our landscape, seeking tourist excellence, promoting socio-health infrastructures, giving way to the lack of housing and putting the planning plans on a departure tray?

Now I extend my hand to each and every one of the parties that make up the political arc of the island's first institution to agree, discuss the great challenges of our islands and treating all our municipalities equally without looking at the color.

Friends, there is much to be done and we have to roll up our sleeves because we have to fulfill our island model, "Identity Lanzarote and La Graciosa". I'll keep telling you. For now... let's get to work!.

By Jacobo Medina, elected councilor of the Popular Party in the Cabildo of Lanzarote
