We have been touched to live a change of cycle. A new world paradigm will govern our lives. The covid-19 crisis is only the first step of an unstable staircase that at times seems to descend into hell. The old regime parades before our eyes, proudly showing all its shames. It is a Dantean spectacle. The impudent exhibition of decrepitude is not pleasant, but we were warned, it cannot catch us by surprise. For a long time, the symptoms of an end that we did not want to see were visible. We heard the death throes, but we did not want to listen. We depredated, plundered, deforested, extinguished until we got to depredate ourselves, plunder ourselves, extinguish ourselves. The unstoppable predation of capitalism has broken the balance of life.
The future involves guaranteeing food sovereignty, achieving energy independence and being a self-sufficient region. To this end, the public sector must be reinforced, restoring citizen confidence in public institutions and undoing everything done in terms of land use under a liberal and mercantile ideology that has led us to this crossroads of death and destruction.
It is time to travel the path of resilience, generating spaces for coexistence that allow us to resist adversity. The first steps have already been shown: solidarity, self-sufficiency, energy independence, food sovereignty, the change of values...are the only formulas that have resisted this first onslaught. To move towards healing we need great agreements based on the public commitment to stop stealing and prioritize any action aimed at supporting the community. The social pact that sustained the Rule of Law, based on the trust of citizens in public representatives, cracked at the rate of B accounting, tax havens, lies, social inequality, partisan policies, land laws that promote the marketing of our territory and the widespread looting of public resources by those who were ordered to protect it. It is a priority to recover that trust.
We must bet on policies that recover the dominion of the public, rescue sectors of the economy on which survival is based and manage them with public vocation. Give support to a large mass of the population that will live in misery, poverty, unemployment and despair. Be aware of the interrelation between islands as the first and most urgent area of action, and in the creation of networks of a sustainable regional market as the only way to guarantee food sovereignty.
We must bet on education as a lifeline because the virus that threatens us with more virulence is that of human foolishness. Ignorance and arrogance feed the excluding ideological radicalisms that carry in their DNA the virus of violence. Education as a source of personal formation that allows us to face a future, of strengthening a society where the capacity for criticism and enrichment of human capacities are promoted and made available to happiness and personal fulfillment as a vital objective.
It is a priority to rescue the public use of land, recover land suitable for cultivation, preserve the land, enhance biodiversity, order the use of the territory from the conviction that the land we tread is the habitat where life must be preserved in any of the forms in which it manifests itself. Man, the human being, is no more important than the bird, the goat or the dolphin, he must relate to the other inhabitants of the planet in a regime of equality and balance because it is the rupture of that balance that has led us to this crossroads with survival. A virus of about 10 manometers has put in check the most industrialized civilization in the history of mankind. Let us learn the lesson of humility. Let us preserve the use of the territory in which we intervene for the sustenance of life, let us promote food sovereignty as a public policy aimed solely and exclusively at feeding the population in conditions of equality and dignity. Until now we have used the resources of the planet to preserve the market of speculation and luxury, let us conform to preserve life.
Let us recover the integral management of essential public services: water, clean energy, waste. Let's bet on energy independence. Let us recover the culture of water, in the eastern islands it is unavoidable. Let us invest public money, what is left, in recovering the water cycle, in recovering the civil works of water, let us build cisterns everywhere, let us invest in guaranteeing the decantation of the cultivated land that slips away from us with each torrential rain, let us bet on the desalination and purification of water in such a way that not a drop of the only good that guarantees life is wasted.
Let us assume the public management of the integral cycle of waste; the recycling plants, the reuse of materials, let us invest in compost production plants....Let us bet on energy independence, the decarbonization of the islands, the public use of clean energy and the public management of these services with such efficiency that they are a source of income and work.
Let us invest in the clean industrialization of the islands, in production in the Canary Islands financed from the public sector, developing fields of employment that support food sovereignty (phytosanitary materials, agricultural tools, feed, fertilizers...), the water cycle industry (membranes, spare parts, machinery...)...the industry derived from energy independence (solar panels, mills, clean electricity, insulators, conductors...), health (equipment, research, development and innovation).
Let us use public money to convert gardening cycles into agriculture and livestock cycles, to promote health education, let us train qualified labor for the industries that must be put in place for the survival of life. Let us put in place a plan to vacate the coast before the sea invades essential infrastructures such as desalination plants and power plants that, throughout the Canary Islands, are on the edge of the sea, a sea that will recover its space.
In the tourism industry, the Canarian Government has decided to dedicate itself to thanatopraxia rather than to face the mourning. All public money used to make up the dead will be money lost. The rate of the tourism industry of the GDP of the Canary Islands must be reversed from 35% to 10%. Drastically reduce the beds, eliminate the dependence on a monoculture without future, raise the quality of the establishments that remain standing, sponge the tourist centers with green areas, demolish to create areas of recreation, health and public sports facilities that provide security to the destination, bet on public transport and social infrastructures of health, care and education...It is necessary to recover large areas of land lost in brick for useful land to develop other models of life.
To move forward we have to do just the opposite of what we have done so far, starting by revoking the Land Law, which was already born mortally wounded in 2017, sponsored under an ideology as liberal as outdated. Development involves going backwards and starting again.
