What we experienced this week in the Community of Madrid is something that should embarrass us. What is not debatable in other territories is part of the central debate of the session in Madrid. Yes, we are talking about the repeal of the laws that protect the rights of the LGTBI community, which VOX intended to carry out, with the support of the Popular Party. Once again, the far right has been left alone, although the abstention of those from Genoa made it clear that they are not really that distant and that, at any moment, they could reach an agreement, contrary to general interests and the progress made in terms of rights.
Freedom also means that a person is free to love another. While some call the defense of these rights a 'progressive dictatorship', their programs maintain the thesis that marriage is not made for people of the same sex. Something so archaic and disgusting that it should generate rejection. At the very least, it is curious that, for the Popular Party, who were full of talk about freedom in their campaign, the far right is their partner to reach any type of agreement.
Nor should it surprise us much if we take into account that the Popular Party already voted against the equal marriage law. Later, seeing the acceptance it had in society, they wanted to make it their own. I am not going to dig further into the newspaper archive because the inconsistencies of a party convicted of irregular financing would be enough to write a book that would end up becoming a best seller.
In this case, we on the left have had no doubts and from the PSOE we will continue fighting to keep alive the valuable legacy left to us by people like Pedro Zerolo, tireless in his defense of the rights of the LGTBI community. Meanwhile, Ayuso avoided the debate to attend the 'José Cubero' Bullfighting School. We already know her predilection for bulls and beers. It must not be easy to attend a debate and tell your best friend that his proposal will not go ahead, for now. Perhaps when Spain plays in the Qatar World Cup it will be a good time.
We will have to be attentive, the movie of the Community of Madrid has more parts and will never cease to surprise us. But, what is clear is that they will find us firmly planted in the face of their attempts to take us back to the Middle Ages. Freedom is not negotiable.
