Today the FCM turns 20 years old. I really want to comply with the proper congratulations and I do it from the heart. However, I don't want to justify such congratulations in the slightest and start assessing its trajectory in defense of the territory, its contributions to the public debate, its permanent exhibition of critical thinking... no, I don't want to go through its trajectory, because it would be presumptuous on my part.
I don't think there is anyone on this earth who doesn't have a clear idea at this point of who the FCM is, what it has done and what it does. Therefore, I insist that it would be an exercise in presumption, of pure pedantry, to try to justify my congratulations.
I prefer to dedicate these letters that I am putting together, to congratulate the people who live in this land for enjoying the luxury of having the FCM.
The FCM is, and it is important not to forget it, a self-financed institution, independent of public powers in an era when such situations are scarce. This allows it to act independently, to be right and wrong without any mandate other than that which emanates from its knowledge and understanding, and that is a luxury within the reach of few institutions.
Its indisputable independence guarantees that, rightly or wrongly, it will contribute from that rabid freedom a qualified and, I insist, free opinion to the great debates that take place in Lanzarote.
As a public official I have enjoyed the support and criticism of the FCM. I have agreed and disagreed at different times, but I have always appreciated its active presence.
That is why today, when the FCM turns 20 years old, I congratulate the institution in the person of its President, but also in that of its Director and in that of all its members who day by day, from their area of responsibility, make César's legacy greater.
But also, and allow me, I congratulate Lanzarote and its people for welcoming the FCM into its bosom.
Congratulations.
