Canary Islands could be neutral

Canary Islands could be neutralThat May 30, 1982, as if a mockery was the day chosen as "Canary Islands Day" in this land, the NO to NATO was voted. This occurred in four "communities" or territories that make up the Spanish State. It was another clear proof that the Canary Islands do not decide on themselves, another proof of the colonialism that European ultraperipheral regions endure, and specifically, the one under Spanish administration.

From the time of the social aggressions caused by the Spanish Legion until today – and perhaps before – a strong anti-militarist movement has stood out in our society, which is fully aware that the Archipelago has become a dangerous military target, due to the appropriation by the NATO side, totally managed by the US of America. Undoubtedly one of the most warlike countries of the past century and what we have of the XXI. That has us on its map and uses us as a military platform, especially for the control and projection of its military forces over continental Africa.

For a few, surely a minority in the Canary Islands, the demand that a Statute of Neutrality be created in the Canary Islands is incomprehensible. Which means nothing other than establishing the Archipelago as a territory of peace. Demilitarized and free of NATO and military maneuvers of any kind. Also betting on the creation of an International Diplomatic Center that gives content to said statute.

Now marks 30 years since the central headquarters of the Institute of Astrophysics of the Canary Islands (IAC) in La Laguna, the Teide Observatory and the Roque de los Muchachos Observatory were inaugurated. That day twelve ministers from European countries and an important representation of the scientific community were present, headed by five Nobel laureates, in addition to representatives from five European monarchies. That is precisely the figure that the Canary Islands should have in the military aspect, but making it extensive to countries outside the NATO bloc. An international neutral space that would take us off the maps and military objectives of anyone.

The current situation, in addition to a danger, is another clear example of colonialism. But not of the American, but of Spanish colonialism that coldly cedes territories for the use of the Yankee side without any scruples. With total indolence. Because what is foreign does not hurt outside, no matter how cruel it is considered at home.

It is time for the Canary Islands to take their course, disengaging from any belligerent side and taking, in this case, "the middle path". Because that was voted here more than thirty years ago and because we have the right to decide on what is ours. Although in Spain they do not want to accept it.
