2 years of public works, 2 years building the future in Lanzarote

July 1 2025 (16:16 WEST)

It has been two years since we assumed the responsibility of managing public works in Lanzarote, and the balance is clear: we have recovered the rhythm and the illusion of doing things well, with planning, seriousness and closeness to the people. Because public works are not just concrete or asphalt, it is quality of life, safety on our roads, more spaces for our elders and an economic boost that generates employment on the island.

We have committed an investment of more than 80 million euros in public works for the next two years, including roads, roundabouts and underpasses, such as the Playa Honda underpass, whose works will be almost completed in July, with the adjacent roads already under execution. Large-scale projects such as the Los Hervideros road, the resurfacing between La Villa and Mozaga or the access to the Costa Teguise Clean Point reinforce island connectivity. In the first year we recovered projects that had been in the drawers for years, we created the first Island Public Works Table and increased by 10 million euros the funds allocated to municipal cooperation plans, demonstrating that public works do not remain in announcements, but translate into facts.

During these two years we have distributed resources fairly and in coordination with the seven municipalities, with investments that have allowed us to boost local projects, improve accessibility in public spaces and guarantee works in all municipalities, generating employment and economic activity in every corner of Lanzarote.

We have prioritized real projects in all municipalities. In Yaiza we are promoting the reinforcement of the pavement on the LZ-704 road and the installation of drainage points for motorhomes that favor a more orderly tourism. In Tinajo we are making progress in contracting the textile cover of the court so that our young people and elders can enjoy sports facilities in better conditions throughout the year, together with the reinforcement of the pavement on local roads. In San Bartolomé we are moving forward in promoting the future urban park of Playa Honda, a green space that will transform the area and give families and young people a place for meeting, leisure and sports, improving the quality of life of the most populated nucleus of the island. These projects are added to the analyses and diagnoses of roads that we are carrying out in different points of the island to rigorously plan the next actions that Lanzarote needs.

We have not neglected the essential: the care of our roads, the beautification of our entrances, the placement of new safety barriers in conflictive areas such as Las Grietas and the improvement of accesses in our towns. We have worked on improving access to the Doctor José Molina Orosa Hospital, facilitating the entry and exit of ambulances and vehicles, and on the adaptation of the hospital parking lot, to guarantee more comfort and safety to the users and workers of the health center. In addition, we are moving forward in the next tender for the road margins project, which will allow us to increase the number of workers and reinforce the maintenance of our island network.

We already have the resurfacing project for the road from Tahíche to Mala, and the resurfacing work on the road from Puerto Calero to Puerto del Carmen will begin shortly. We will execute a new roundabout that will improve pedestrian access between the area of La Caracola in Tahíche and the Teleclub of the town, and we continue working on the landscaping improvement of the accesses from Tahíche towards Arrecife, from Arrecife towards San Bartolomé and in the accesses to the airport. We already have the project for the road entering Costa Teguise from Arrecife, the new Teguise bypass and Calle José Betancort, and we are drafting the projects for the roads of the Malpaso and Tabayesco curves. The works of the Plaza de Las Palmas in Arrecife, the El Calvario park in Tinajo and the preferred stop of Costa Teguise promoted by Public Works with Next Generation funds are progressing.

These initiatives have improved road safety, modernized facilities and created hundreds of direct and indirect jobs. We are aware that there are still pending challenges, such as improvements in urban networks, water, transport or access to the airport, but we are on the right track, developing public works in a responsible, sustainable and job-creating way. These two years have served us to consolidate a strategic planning for 2030 that guarantees a more cohesive Lanzarote and prepared for the future.

There is much to be done, and we know it, but we have shown that when you work with a committed team and with high-level technicians, things go forward. We will continue on our way, with the same commitment that brought us here, because our obligation is clear: to manage effectively, listen to the people and make Lanzarote a place where every public work is synonymous with progress and opportunities for all.
