The Minister of Ecological Transition and Energy of the Government of the Canary Islands, Mariano Zapata, encourages all citizens to participate in the popular vote of the national contest "Europe is felt," which will take place on October 10 starting at 8:30 in the morning (Canarian time) through the Streaming portal of the Ministry of Finance.
The counselor emphasized that this recognition now depends on the support of all Canary Islanders and Lanzarote residents. "We want the effort being made in the islands to protect and restore our natural spaces to be reflected in this contest," he stated.
Zapata recalled that "the voting will open once the three projects in the 'Europe Feels Green' category are presented, for only 5 minutes and through a QR code that the contest organizers will project." According to him, "it will be an opportunity to demonstrate, once again, that the Canary Islands are committed to sustainability and to the defense of its natural heritage."
The project in detail
The Famara peaks restoration project, co-financed by the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF), has involved an investment of more than 1.7 million euros earmarked for the conservation and restoration of a unique space in Lanzarote that is home to more than 350 endemic species, with the production and planting of 10,000 specimens of native flora and broad social, educational, and institutional participation.
This project has not only recovered part of the Famara summit ecosystem, but has also created a window of opportunity for life, acting as a refuge and source of seeds for new areas undergoing recovery.
