The mayor of Arrecife, Yonathan de León, will bring to the Board of the Port Authority of Las Palmas this Thursday a proposal to analyze promoting a green hydrogen plant in the port area of the capital of Lanzarote, within the emerging green hydrogen maritime corridors, as already exist in other state ports of the Peninsula.

Yonathan de León, who is the only public official from the island of Lanzarote present on the Board of the Port Authority of Las Palmas, intends with this proposal that green hydrogen become a reality in Lanzarote as a source of clean energy, through a logistics center in the port area of Arrecife, or in the vicinity of the port, in the capital of Lanzarote.

The Board of the Port Authority of Las Palmas meets, for the first time during this term, in Arrecife. The meeting will be this Thursday, February 20, starting at 10:00 a.m.

The mayor recalled that "cruise ships are currently under construction that will be fully powered by clean energy generated through green hydrogen." The first of these ships will set sail from 2027, and Arrecife contributes more than 33% of the cruise activity volume to the state ports of the Port Authority in the province of Las Palmas.

Yonathan de León details that "a report for the Clean Hydrogen Partnership highlights the role that ports should assume on three levels: as users, as infrastructure providers, and as hydrogen transit platforms. The same report reveals that climate and energy policies will encourage key stakeholders in the port sector to set targets and implement decarbonization solutions. In particular, hydrogen and its carriers could contribute to abandoning the use of fossil fuels."

From the Arrecife City Council, with a full representative on the board of the Port Authority of Las Palmas, it is recalled that "Lanzarote is the closest island to the European continent, and with less distance to the main port areas of North Africa, which would encourage the first of these green hydrogen generating centers in a port area to be on the easternmost island of the Canary Islands, and with excellent demand from tourist cruise companies, and other shipping companies specialized in maritime cabotage."

The ports of Algeciras, Alicante, and Huelva, all in the State Ports network, have advanced their strategies for the implementation of green hydrogen logistics centers.

The opportunity of the public exhibition of the Supplementary Plan of Arrecife and the new PIOT

The mayor recalled that "during this 2025, approvals are being processed for two urban planning documents for the planning of the island, such as the new PIOT, and the Supplementary Plan of Arrecife, which will be submitted to an upcoming plenary session." Thus, in conjunction with this study that Yonathan de León proposes for approval by the Port Authority of Las Palmas, it would be strengthened with the territorial adaptation in the vicinity of the port area of Arrecife.

From Arrecife, capital of the Biosphere Reserve island, "we are committed to projects that are articulated with the use of renewable energies applied to the port area, with the aim of contributing to a clean economy and combating climate change, and where the capital of Lanzarote can be part of the design and implementation of a smart network linked to hydrogen in state port areas."
