All political forces present in the extraordinary session of the Yaiza Plenary held this Monday —UPY, CC, PP, and PSOE— unanimously approved the institutional declaration presented by Coalición Canaria. The agreement demands that the Directorate General of the Coast and the Sea, dependent on the Ministry for Ecological Transition and the Demographic Challenge, urgently restore a safe, adequate, and adapted access for the usual users of Playa Abajo, in El Golfo, "especially for professionals in the fishing sector."
The four signatory parties also urge the Ministry to open a working group with the participation of the Yaiza City Council, representatives of the fishing sector, residents of El Golfo, and other competent administrations to agree on a definitive solution.
Likewise, the Plenary requests a detailed technical, legal, and administrative report on the reasons that led Costas to unilaterally demolish the access staircase to Playa Abajo, an action that, as the declaration recalls, was carried out without consensus with the Yaiza City Council, which had requested its repair and not its demolition.
The institutional declaration also expresses the support of the Yaiza City Council for the fishermen and residents of El Golfo affected by this action, while recognizing the importance of traditional fishing activity for the identity and cultural heritage of the municipality.
The text also underlines the close historical, social, and economic link of El Golfo with the sea, as well as the discontent generated by an action that the municipality describes as "incomprehensible". In this regard, it highlights that "traditional fishing activity is part of the identity of the town and constitutes an essential element of its cultural heritage and way of life."
