The dirt roads that give access to the Papagayo beaches and the campsite are the subject of new maintenance work this week. Thus, the Yaiza City Council intervenes with its own resources on the route that goes from the control post of the Natural Monument of Los Ajaches to the entrance of the Playa Mujeres car park and other sections that show greater deterioration due to the continuous passage of vehicles, especially during these summer months.
In any case, the mayor of Yaiza, Óscar Noda, recalls that "the island council has a part of the responsibility in the care of the Natural Monument, so we continue to await the assumption of its powers".
Almost a year ago, the City Council sent the Presidency a detailed report from the municipal legal services that argues and explains why the Island Council, as the managing body of the Natural Monument of Los Ajaches, has powers and responsibilities in its care and maintenance, as expressly provided for in the Conservation Rules of this protected area located in the south of Lanzarote.
Yaiza demonstrates that it is carrying out work that does not correspond to the municipality and therefore again requests the administrative collaboration of the First Island Corporation "so that each institution assumes its duties and makes sufficient technical and economic resources available for the conservation of Los Ajaches. We do not shy away from our responsibilities, but we demand that the Island Council also fulfill its obligations, including the regular maintenance of the dirt tracks, the renewal of the Monument's signage, its cleaning and general equipment".
Yaiza has already proposed a technical-political meeting with the participation of the different government areas of the Island Council, the Biosphere Reserve Council and all the political groups represented in the Island Council to debate the present and future of the conservation of Los Ajaches.
