The City Council approved this Friday in Plenary a Institutional Declaration that promotes the candidacy of IES Yaiza and its Triathlon for the Viera y Clavijo distinction in the scope of the Autonomous Community of the Canary Islands, a proposal that comes just in the year of celebration of the 25th anniversary of the IES Yaiza Triathlon.
“We consider this candidacy fair because our IES stands out for the education in values and cohesion of the educational community through a unique sporting event in the Canary Islands that dates back to 1993,” says Óscar Noda, who appreciates the support of all the political groups represented in the municipal plenary.
According to the regulations of the distinction, the City Council emphasizes “the innovation, good practices, values education and interdisciplinary projects of the IES Yaiza reflected in its Triathlon”. As published on the electronic headquarters of the Government of the Canary Islands, the deadline for submitting applications closes next Thursday, November 28.
The history of the IES Yaiza Triathlon began in 1993, although several circumstances beyond the organization, including the pandemic, prevented its celebration for a couple of years. The event, a benchmark in the Canary Islands, already brings together almost 1,000 athletes from all the Islands, adding students from ESO, high school and teachers.
José Luis Yagüe Pérez was the first director of IES Yaiza and a great promoter of a test that not only remains, but grows thanks to the perseverance of the management team, teachers, students and volunteers, together with the collaboration of the Yaiza City Council, the Cabildo de Lanzarote and the support of security forces and bodies.
"Apart from the values of integration, effort, discipline and teamwork linked to the IES Yaiza Triathlon, the event has been the first experience and platform for Yaiza and Lanzarote athletes who are now in the sporting elite, including the young Yerove Rodríguez, a resident of Playa Blanca and former student of IES Yaiza, who last October in Valencia broke the Spanish U20 half marathon record with a time of 1:06:14 hours," they say. “We are optimistic about the candidacy of IES Yaiza and we hope for the island's support,” adds the mayor.
