The City Council of Yaiza has invited the island's population to the talk Citizenship can indeed offer alternatives to the ZAR in Lanzarote, conceived as an indispensable space for citizen participation and reflection on the present and future of the implementation of renewable energies on the island.

This conference is proposed at a time of "much uncertainty and lack of information and consensus regarding the location of the Renewable Energy Acceleration Zones (ZAR), agreed upon by the Government of the Canary Islands and the Cabildo of Lanzarote," the council highlighted in a statement.

Thus, "although now the first island corporation retracts and asks the regional Executive to halt the delimitation of the ZAR".The talk will be given by Professor Ricardo Guerrero Lemus, on Friday, February 13, at 5:00 PM, at the Uga Camel Center, located opposite the municipal market. Admission is free and Yaiza also announces live broadcast on the website or directly on the municipal Youtube channelRicardo Guerrero is a University Professor and director of the Master's Degree in Renewable Energies at the University of La Laguna, a professional with extensive experience and international recognition in the field of research and management of renewable energy projects.“It is necessary to continue gathering technical information and make sound decisions that help us face the ecological transition without harming the common interests of the municipality and Lanzarote. Clean energies yes, but not at any price, not at the price of distorting our landscape and consuming rural land. Professor Guerrero is a person versed in the matter who is not only capable of offering us information and knowledge, but also has the full will to do so altruistically,” the mayor added

The danger of "setting aside" municipalities

Yaiza has warned that "the conventional energy sector, which already makes a lot of money, wants to participate in the ecological transition at lower costs".  “Public administrations cannot allow it. They want to install renewable energy facilities on rural land, because it is much cheaper, when the sensible thing to do is to prioritize locations on urban land on roofs and other anthropized land and to stimulate energy communities and self-consumption,” has maintained the mayor of Yaiza, who as a councilor of the Island Council already presented a motion last year that proposed, among other points, the redefinition of the location of the ZAR in Lanzarote

Noda has recalled that this motion was rejected by the government of CC and PP, which is now backtracking and asking Canarias for what Yaiza has always defended.

Yaiza has highlighted that "Professor Guerrero's talk comes at a crucial moment due to all the information he can provide and the open debate surrounding the strategic sector of renewable energies".
