Four decades ago, Lanzarote experienced a media stir upon seeing a woman in the Local Police uniform for the first time. That young woman was María Dolores Hernández Barreto, born in Arrecife, who joined the municipal police force of Yaiza in 1985 at just 23 years old after passing the theoretical and physical exams through open competition. She remained in service until 1991, the year she obtained a position as an administrative assistant, a profession she continues to practice at the City Council with the same dedication, awaiting her retirement in 2026.
This Wednesday, during the celebration of Saint Catherine, patron saint of the Local Police, the municipality honored her career in a solemn ceremony at the Benito Pérez Armas House of Culture. Her colleagues call her "Loli," a nickname that reflects the esteem accumulated over years of public service.
The mayor and councilor responsible for Security, Óscar Noda, emphasized "the professionalism and ability to break barriers and molds in more difficult times, which make Loli a woman who is an example of overcoming adversity and an inspiration for new generations."
