The mayor of Yaiza, Óscar Noda, ordered on the same night of Monday, March 23, the municipal Technical Office to prepare a detailed report on the damages to public infrastructure and private property caused by the heavy rains that the Montaña Roja area endured, in the tourist town of Playa Blanca, especially the Faro Pechiguera sector. This area was the most affected by rainfall of 105 liters per square meter discharged in a short period of time and over a small populated area near the western slope of the Montaña Roja volcanic cone.

This Thursday, Óscar Noda himself, the Councilor for Public Works of Yaiza, Ángel Lago, the Councilor for Citizen Security and Montaña Roja District, Beatriz Vázquez, and a municipal technician, reviewed together with the Club Lanzarote property and its technical-legal team the first assessments, not only to act already on sidewalks, roads, networks and ravines, but, according to the mayor, “on constructive solutions, which we transferred to the promoter of the partial plan, aimed at solving the problem with the objective of avoiding or largely minimizing the impact of phenomena similar to storm Therese”.

Aside from the cleaning tasks still being carried out by municipal staff and Club Lanzarote, with the support of a crew from one of the island Cabildo's employment plans, requested by the mayor from councilor Jesús Machín, the promoting firm of Montaña Roja begins the work of repairing sidewalks in the most affected streets to immediately execute the reinforcement of the ravine near Belgium Street. The proximity of this street to the hillside and the lack of vegetation on the mountain caused the overflow of the water collection infrastructures that came down dragging sediments.

In addition to public infrastructures, the flows affected nearly one hundred homes in Montaña Roja. Yaiza confirms that experts from the Insurance Compensation Consortium will visit the affected area this Friday to begin the assessment of property damages of different consideration.
