The Yaiza City Council denounces that the 42 public housing units purchased by Canarias and the Cabildo in Playa Blanca have still not been awarded.

The Consistory recalls that "the purchase agreement at the notary and the photo of the president of the Cabildo de Lanzarote, Oswaldo Betancort, showing the keys of the 42 newly built homes in the Los Ajaches residential complex to the camera, acquired by the Government of Canarias and the First Insular Corporation to put them on the affordable rental market, was on January 30, 2025"

“More than a year and a half has passed and the applicants for public housing in Playa Blanca are still waiting for their award. Obviously, these 42 houses do not cover the entire demand of 400 people in the municipality who are waiting for public housing, but it is a relief while other avenues that we have proposed to both administrations are resolved,” emphasizes the mayor of Yaiza, Óscar Noda.

After some time, the municipal leader requested a new working meeting with María del Pino de León Hernández, director of the Canary Islands Housing Institute, "to address this disturbing issue of the award and also to know when the construction of the 136 affordable rental homes on the 42,000 square meters that we ceded to the regional government will be put out to tender. The project is ready and we expressly requested the Government that the execution be financed with funds from the State Housing Plan 2026 - 2030, whose first installments should be received by the autonomous communities this very summer.”

In relation to the 42 homes, Óscar Noda also requested in writing a meeting with the president of the Cabildo, considering that the award was announced for last June. "We still do not know the current situation of the procedure and the Cabildo, as an involved party and an institution that co-financed the 9.3 million euros of investment, also has to provide explanations,” adds the mayor.

Óscar Noda finally recalls that Yaiza "pointed the way to alleviate the housing shortage in Lanzarote and Canarias. We were the first City Council to manage and issue the first permits for the construction of protected private promotion houses in Montaña Roja. In the third phase of Los Ajaches, there are 76 more houses completed that the Cabildo can also buy along with Canarias, or the Autonomous Community can do so with funds from the State Housing Plan.”
