The mayor of San Bartolomé, Isidro Pérez, together with the Councillor for Culture, Carmen Medina, received the writer Marcial Martín Bermúdez at the Town Hall, on the occasion of the recent publication of his work Witness to History. Chronicles and experiences of the creation of the Art, Culture and Tourism Centers of the Cabildo of Lanzarote and La Graciosa.
During the meeting, the municipal authorities conveyed to the author their sincerest congratulations for a work that represents a documentary legacy of incalculable value for the collective memory of Lanzarote.
The work, as Martín Bermúdez himself explained, is dedicated to the memory of all the actors who, as fundamental pillars, contributed to the construction, execution, and development of the CACTs. It is a well-deserved tribute, in the author's words, "to all of us who formed a true family, striving without expecting anything in return, so that Lanzarote could overcome its historical abandonment and achieve the development and prosperity it deserved."
Throughout its pages, the author—who was part of the team promoted by the then president of the Cabildo, José Ramírez Cerda, and the artist César Manrique—offers a privileged testimony about the implementation and the social and cultural impact of this network of centers, which have defined the tourist and cultural identity of the island.
The mayor, Isidro Pérez, emphasized that "Marcial's life and professional career has been linked not only to the progress of Lanzarote, but also to the preservation of our recent history. Books like this are essential so that new generations know the foundations on which modern Lanzarote was built."
For her part, councilwoman Carmen Medina emphasized "the immense value of recovering such decisive chapters of our history from personal experience, and thanked the author for his generosity in sharing these experiences with the entire society."
"Witness to History" is destined to become a reference work for understanding one of the most transformative periods in Lanzarote, and is now available for public purchase.
On Wednesday, October 15, the San Bartolomé theater will host the presentation of this book by its author at 8:00 p.m., with free admission until full capacity.
