The two councilors that VOX has in the Arrecife City Council, Eugenio Hernández Cabrera and Jorge Enrique Barrios Rodríguez, have presented a motion to discuss in the next municipal plenary session the pedestrianization of the remaining part of León street and Castillo, popularly known as Calle Real, from the Four Corners to the Vía Medular.

VOX has added that "it is very necessary to continue advancing in the idea absolutely abandoned at this time to improve Arrecife, carrying out courageous actions that go beyond the usual and routine maintenance that is done of what has already been planned in our not exactly recent past".

Thus, the far-right formation has added that “in order to revitalize the commercial area of the capital's center, a very important role is to connect the commercial areas with each other. Bringing Calle Real closer to Vía Medular would establish a connection through a promenade that could be clearly used to promote the small and medium-sized businesses that already exist and to create new ones”, explained the municipal spokesperson, Eugenio Hernández.

“We believe that within that ambition that politicians do not always have, the creation of a larger, interconnected and free commercial complex can be considered so that customers who visit the area can move comfortably without obstacles and with a more attractive environment, with a decoration typical of an area without vehicles and with the sidewalks at the same height as the road”, he added.

The formation integrated into the Mixed Group of the capital's Consistory has considered that with this measure, relatively simple, it would be possible to make a joint offer of commerce in the center of Arrecife so that visitors can move throughout the pedestrian space, and that merchants can have more possibilities to continue expanding their offer in these and adjacent sections, even projecting other types of businesses that are absolutely unfeasible at the moment due to traffic circumstances.

“They cannot spend all day talking about connectivity, ecological transitions, sustainable travel, friendly cities, if concrete measures are not taken that can be implemented in a short time. This, of course, seems to us to be one of them, allowing people not to have to drive from the commercial area of Calle Real to the new shopping center that was opened without connection in the Rambla Medular. It was done without planning and we believe that we are at the moment, taking into account that there is so much boasting about financing and that they have money to spare, to execute a project like the one we propose”, underlined Eugenio Hernández.

For these reasons, the two VOX councilors have submitted a proposal to the Arrecife City Council Plenary so that, firstly, the pedestrianization of the area from Plaza de España (Cuatro Esquinas) on León y Castillo street to Vía Medular is projected; secondly, that this area be free of parking and equipped with furniture for rest and enjoyment of the walk, improving the trees and providing it with garden space; in an important third place that the road and sidewalks are at the same height to walk comfortably through the area and to allow accessibility and the total elimination of architectural barriers, and, finally, that vehicle traffic be reorganized so as not to hinder communications or activities in the area.
