Vox demands that the Arrecife City Council "control once and for all" the users of electric scooters in the city. The spokesperson for Vox in the Arrecife City Council, Eugenio Hernández, assures that "walking through Arrecife in certain areas is becoming a real odyssey".
"If not too long ago there were some uncivil people who were speeding with bicycles through places as busy as Calle Real, now we see that the phenomenon is worse, since it happens with some individuals who do it with a motor, with the well-known and dangerous scooters," added Eugenio. In this "forceful" way, Hernández reflects his "discomfort" for what is happening with a type of motor vehicle that the current municipal government "promised to control and that, however, roams the city like a king in his castle," he highlighted.
For that reason, Hernández will present a motion to the Municipal Plenary not only demanding "greater control and surveillance" but even the "prohibition" of them circulating through certain areas. And he has raised the "tone of alarm due to the number of testimonies" that residents are conveying to him, who in some cases are even becoming "afraid to go out on the street." "It is unacceptable that elderly people address me at this time almost daily to express the panic they feel, after having been able to be run over when they were walking calmly along a street in the capital," the spokesperson remarked.
Vox recalls that on January 22, the new regulations of the General Directorate of Traffic on the circulation of electric scooters in Spain came into force. Among other things, the owners of these vehicles should have had an "identification plate, which is not the case in most cases," he criticized. The municipal government of the Popular Party (PP) and the Canarian Coalition (CC) announced then that the Arrecife Local Police was carrying out informative actions since the autumn through the roads of the entire capital municipality about the entry into force of the new regulations of the General Directorate of Traffic (DGT) for the circulation of electric scooters, all directly and through social networks.
"It must be that that was a flash in the pan and that they forgot their own recommendations, as they have forgotten to impose sanctions on those who systematically fail to comply with the regulations," Eugenio Hernández recalled, visibly annoyed. Among other things, since January 22, it is mandatory for electric scooter owners to carry an identification aluminum plate, a reduced sheet of general characteristics, a circulation certificate, civil liability insurance, and wear a helmet. "Does anyone know any user who complies with this, has anyone seen agents stopping and sanctioning those who fail to comply?" the councilor asks.
"Regardless of the danger that it is posing for many residents," Eugenio Hernández also demands that the "safety of scooter users themselves be controlled." "It is not strange the day we see very young girls and boys circulating without a helmet, at high speed and with little light, in some cases at night going not on streets but on roads. Some do not bother to signal their own position, which demonstrates their degree of irresponsibility or how little they value their lives, as they value very little the fact that any resident can run them over, causing a double drama," the spokesperson explained.
For this reason, Vox asks the municipal government to "not abandon this important issue and give specific orders" to the agents of the Local Police to "control a situation that has gotten out of hand, in addition to the moment in which they have to sit down to take more drastic measures such as those adopted by other city councils in the Canary Islands," they concluded.
