The VOX Parliamentary Group has presented an initiative in the Parliament of the Canary Islands to demand "the comprehensive rehabilitation, modernization, and reopening" of the Lanzarote Insular Hospital, as well as to preserve all the healthcare resources that this health center currently provides. At the same time, it has accused migrants of generating "a significant cost" to the Canarian healthcare system.
VOX has pointed out that the Canary Islands have become "one of the regions with the highest demographic growth in Spain during the last decade," while facing the highest level of aging in its history. Thus, it has assured that this reality has caused a constant increase in the demand for health and social health services, especially in areas such as geriatric care, dependency, and long-term care, without the infrastructures and healthcare resources having grown at the same pace.
Criminalizes the arrival of migrants
Vox has pointed out in a press release "the pressure" that essential public services are enduring as a consequence of irregular immigration, which, they have assured, "has represented a significant cost for the Canarian healthcare system."
In this context, the deterioration of a reference infrastructure such as the Lanzarote Insular Hospital is particularly serious, as its closure generates concern among users, families, and healthcare professionals and fuels the sense of abandonment perceived by many elderly people on the island due to the uncertainty about the center's future.
Therefore, among the proposed measures, VOX requests that the Government of the Canary Islands publish, within a maximum of thirty days from the approval of the initiative, the Technical Plan for the Comprehensive Rehabilitation and Structural Consolidation of the Lanzarote Insular Hospital.
Likewise, the initiative proposes the creation of a specific and multi-year budgetary item in the General Budgets of the Autonomous Community of the Canary Islands for the fiscal years 2027 and 2028, under the denomination of "Special Fund for the Reconstruction and Modernization of the Lanzarote Insular Hospital," in order to guarantee the full financing of all necessary actions for the rehabilitation and subsequent reopening of the center.
The proposal also demands that, during the entire period of execution of the works, the entirety of the 52 public geriatrics beds be maintained, as well as the human resources and services currently assigned to the Hospital Insular, avoiding any reduction in the care capacity intended for patients and users.
Furthermore, the training requests that the transfer to the building adjacent to the Doctor José Molina Orosa University Hospital have "a strictly temporary character". With this, the return of all personnel, equipment, services, and care beds to the Hospital Insular is guaranteed once the rehabilitation works are concluded.
With this initiative, VOX seeks to ensure that the Hospital Insular de Lanzarote fully recovers its operability, maintains its care capacity, and continues to provide an essential health service for the island, with all guarantees of safety, quality, and sustainability for professionals and users.
