The Plenary Session of the Lanzarote Cabildo has unanimously approved the motion presented by the councilor of the Mixed Group, Armando Santana, for the recognition, protection, and promotion of the Canarian linguistic modality as part of the "intangible cultural heritage of the island and of the entire Archipelago".
The initiative, supported by all political groups of the island corporation, seeks to take an institutional step in "the defense and valorization of one of the most genuine expressions of Canarian identity: its way of speaking". The motion expressly recognizes the Canarian linguistic modality as an essential element of collective identity, the result of a unique historical evolution in which European, African, and American influences converge.
During the defense of the proposal, Armando Santana highlighted that "our way of speaking is much more than a communication tool; it is a living manifestation of our culture, our history, and our collective memory". Likewise, he stressed the need to promote measures that contribute to enhancing and disseminating this cultural heritage in the face of the linguistic and cultural homogenization processes that are currently occurring.
Among the approved agreements is the commitment of the Cabildo to incorporate, when appropriate, expressions and characteristics of Canarian speech in institutional campaigns, publications, and awareness-raising actions. Furthermore, awareness-raising activities will be promoted for both the Corporation's staff and citizens, and a "Decalogue for the Promotion and Valorization of the Canarian Linguistic Modality in the Lanzarote Cabildo" will be developed.
The motion also urges the Government of the Canary Islands to continue promoting similar initiatives in other public administrations and includes the transfer of the agreement to the main academic and cultural institutions of the Archipelago.
With this unanimous approval, the Lanzarote Cabildo reaffirms its commitment to the protection of Canarian cultural identity and to the preservation of a linguistic legacy that is an essential part of the history and present of the Islands.
