The Tinajo City Council approved in an extraordinary and urgent plenary session held on September 29, 2025, the "Pilot project of mobility in the tourist area, dissuasive parking and electric shuttles," which contemplates the acquisition of three electric urban buses. The winning bidder is KL Buses S.L., which will supply two Class I electric vehicles, with lengths between 8 and 12.3 meters, for an amount of 792,000 euros, as well as a third bus of between 5.5 and 8 meters for 339,300 euros. These vehicles will form a 100% electric and sustainable public transport system in the municipality of Tinajo, designed to reduce the environmental impact of the intensive use of private vehicles in protected natural spaces. The project aims to promote more efficient and safe tourist mobility, based on renewable energies and aligned with the conservation strategies of Lanzarote's natural heritage. The mayor of Tinajo, Jesús Machín, celebrated the awarding, stating that "we have finally managed to get a company to commit to supplying the three buses in a timely manner. It is the future of Tinajo and we are working on it." As he explained, this initiative will be key to regulating access to such frequented enclaves as Timanfaya, the Volcán del Cuervo, or Caldera Blanca, eliminating current parking areas on the trails and replacing them with regulated routes using electric shuttles.
In addition, Machín announced that the City Council is already working on a complementary project based on green hydrogen, which would take advantage of the surplus water from the treatment plant to generate this clean fuel. "Our intention is for Tinajo to have buses powered by hydrogen for areas such as Sports and Culture, and later to connect the towns of the municipality," he concluded.
