The Tías City Council joins the celebration of the International Day of Persons with Disabilities, recalling its "commitment to the right to universal accessibility and the elimination of social barriers, both physical and attitudinal."

"Together, especially from public administrations, we have to ensure that no one is left behind in the enjoyment of their rights," said the second deputy mayor and councilor for Social Services, Nicolás Saavedra.

From the Tías City Council, they point out that they work directly with several groups related to disability, such as 'Ascursolanz' and 'Apsal' (related to sign language), and add that they maintain contact with the association 'Derecho Accesible', whose president, Montserrat Amores, demands compliance with the rules "for full social integration."

"We are not second-class citizens, we can contribute to society just like any other person," says Montserrat Amores, whose association provides free legal advice with information and adequate support in matters of disability, in addition to having "a job bank for inclusive companies and users, among other services."

In Amores' opinion, Lanzarote still presents "many architectural barriers, despite the fact that in 2017 the legal deadline was met for all initiatives, whether private or public, to assume their responsibility and guarantee universal accessibility."

"We have to understand that society changes. I am a wheelchair user and I am a lawyer, the social context has changed and we have to eliminate the physical and attitudinal barriers of people through values such as respect, responsibility, awareness and understanding that equality is necessary," she concludes
