Plastics, debris, irons, and pruning remains that would have ended up in the sea are some of the waste extracted in recent weeks from the cliffs of the La Tiñosa coastline. The Tías City Council promoted an intensive cleaning campaign that is being carried out by a company specialized in vertical work.

These cliffs are part of a space of high ecological value integrated into a Special Conservation Area (ZEC) within the European Union's Natura 2000 Network, which is why cleaning is essential to protect marine life, the coast, the landscape, and the quality of life for everyone.

The mayor of Tías, José Juan Cruz, and the councilor for the Environment, Carmen Gloria Rodríguez, want to highlight the importance of conserving all spaces, but fundamentally those protected by the high value of their habitats, their biodiversity, and the presence of threatened species.

During these weeks, waste accumulated in areas of very difficult access is being removed, where for years waste has been deposited that degrades the landscape and threatens the marine environment. Many of them, if not removed, would end up in the sea, contributing to marine pollution and affecting coastal fauna and ecosystems.

“Every bag of trash removed is one less impact on the ocean. Our coastline is one of the municipality's greatest treasures. Taking care of it is not an option, it is a shared responsibility. What is thrown off a cliff today, may be in the sea tomorrow,” says José Juan Cruz.

Carmen Gloria Rodríguez reiterates that the classification of this space of high ecological value as a Special Area of Conservation within the Natura 2000 Network implies an added commitment to protection, as it harbors habitats and species of special interest. "Cleaning is not just aesthetic, it is active conservation of biodiversity."

From the City Council, it is insisted that the need to avoid throwing any type of waste into the urban and natural environment, and it is recalled that there are alternatives for its correct management, such as the island's clean point and the free collection service for pruning waste.
