The Tías City Council has assumed with its own resources the work of conservation and maintenance of the palm trees located in the vicinity of Hospiten and the LZ-505 road, "after years of neglect by the Lanzarote City Council", they say from the Consistory.
The mayor of Tías, José Juan Cruz, the first deputy mayor, Nicolás Saavedra, and the councilor for the Environment, Carmen Gloria Rodríguez, visited the area where urgent action is being taken in the face of "the lack of phytosanitary treatments, irrigation and removal of dead specimens by the island administration, which has led to the loss of a large part of this natural heritage".
Currently, the Tías City Council is carrying out pruning work, plant endotherapy treatments against the Diocalandra frumenti pest, as well as the felling and removal of dead palm trees in different areas.
The actions are being carried out in the vicinity of the Puerto del Carmen Clean Point, with the pruning and treatment of 35 living palm trees and the felling of 10 dead palm trees; and in the area between the LZ-505 road and the service road to Hospiten, with the pruning and treatment of 40 living palm trees and the felling of 108 dead palm trees.
In addition, work is being carried out next to Lanzarote Golf Puerto del Carmen, with the pruning and treatment of 26 living palm trees and the felling of 36 dead palm trees; the link between the road and the ring road, with the pruning and treatment of 21 palm trees and the felling of 7 dead palm trees; and the pruning and treatment of a living palm tree and the felling of 36 dead palm trees in the same environment.
A municipal effort to preserve natural heritage
The mayor of Tías, José Juan Cruz, declares that "given the inaction of the Cabildo, we have decided to intervene with municipal funds to save the palm trees that are still alive and guarantee their conservation. We could not continue to allow this natural heritage to be lost, which is part of the landscape and identity of our municipality."
With these actions, the Tías City Council "reaffirms its commitment to the protection of the environment, the care of green spaces and the defense of natural heritage, despite the fact that the competition corresponds to the Lanzarote City Council", they conclude.
