This is how the new sanitation system of La Graciosa is progressing

The Teguise City Council continues on July 22 with the development of the Sanitation and Supply Plan for La Graciosa with the execution of cleaning and emptying work on cesspools, septic tanks, and sealed tanks in Caleta del Sebo to improve health conditions, protect the natural environment, and reinforce basic services on the eighth island.

The action is part of the Sanitation and Supply Plan for La Graciosa and is being developed thanks to an initial subsidy of 200,000 euros granted by the Government of the Canary Islands, which allowed the currently ongoing contract to be executed.

To date, a total of 86 cesspools, septic tanks, and sealed tanks have been intervened, removing more than 700 cubic meters of wastewater and septic sludge. These tasks will continue to be developed progressively until the new sanitation system planned for the island becomes operational.

The mayor of Teguise, Olivia Duque, highlights that this action responds to the singularities of La Graciosa and the need to preserve an environment of high environmental value. "We are talking about a necessary and exclusive action for the urban center of Caleta del Sebo due to its conditions within the Natural Park and the possible impacts on the protected natural space," she points out.

"The objective is to provide the urban center of Caleta del Sebo with a sanitation network and improve supply infrastructures, thus guaranteeing adequate sustainability conditions," she explains. "La Graciosa requires real solutions and planning to have an adequate sanitation system and improve its supply," adds Duque.

The actions will continue to be executed at the request of the residents, as not all facilities require emptying. Furthermore, the work is being developed in coordination with the Environment Department to guarantee the correct management of the extracted waste and avoid any impact on the marine environment and the protected surroundings of La Graciosa.

With the aim of giving continuity to this essential service, the Teguise City Council has received a new subsidy of 200,000 euros from the Government of the Canary Islands, which has allowed it to tender again the contract for the cleaning and emptying of cesspools, septic tanks and sealed tanks. The procedure is currently pending award and will guarantee the continuity of these actions until the future sanitation system of Caleta del Sebo comes into operation.
