The mayor of Yaiza, Óscar Noda, visited the works of the new Playa Blanca Sports Hall last week together with the first deputy mayor, Ángel Domínguez, and other members of the Government Group, a project that represents a municipal investment of 7.2 million euros and which is entering its final stretch “with 75 percent already executed.”

During the visit, in which they were guided by the execution director, José Antonio Sánchez, they confirmed that the works “continue to advance at a good pace” and that they have already completed “the closing of the facade, the grandstand area overlooking the sports courts and the installation of the roof of the pool area.” Furthermore, that same week they planned to conclude the placement of the roof of the indoor multi-use court area.

Óscar Noda: “The residents of the municipality will be able to enjoy high-level sports facilities that will be a benchmark on the Island, as they incorporate innovative energy use systems and are designed to facilitate and economize their maintenance.”

From the southern Consistory they point out that the design of the Sports Hall “takes care of integration so that its volume, colors and textures do not have a negative impact on the environment”, and that it also has “a renewable energy coefficient above 74 percent, being an efficient complex from the energy point of view, as well as totally accessible.”

In addition to the savings that this may entail, they also add that “the maintenance and cleaning of the facilities has been taken into account, incorporating walkways that will facilitate access to the high areas without the need for lifting machinery and a perimeter gallery around the pools and ducts to the drainage area that will allow them to be repaired quickly and easily in the event of leaks or filtration, one of the most common problems.”

From the City Council they point out that the Playa Blanca Sports Hall is divided into two independent areas, “one that houses the swimming pools and another in which the sports courts are located, to facilitate its management and operation, but it is designed so that they can also function jointly, since they communicate easily.”

“The objective is to make the most of these facilities and that is why it has been focused from the beginning on having a multidisciplinary use, which can also be used for competitions and large-scale events or by schools,” highlights the southern president.

A pool area with all the comforts

The pool area, as they detail, has three pools, one 25 meters long with an average depth of 160 cm, a second pool designed for teaching 12 meters long and with a shallower depth and a third smaller one for physiotherapy and rehabilitation. This area also has a sauna and steam bath, as well as changing rooms, toilets and its own grandstand with capacity for 130 spectators.

For its part, the area destined for the pavilion consists of three independent multi-use courts (basketball, indoor soccer, volleyball and handball), closed with a motorized curtain that allows it to be converted into a single court for holding high competition events, so it has been designed in accordance with the NIDE standards (Regulations on Sports and Leisure Facilities) in terms of dimensions, type of surfaces, solar orientation and lighting, etc. In addition, they point out that it allows the installation of “a stage box” for the realization of artistic or other types of shows and has its own grandstand with capacity for 1,040 people, changing rooms and toilets.

The complex also has a gym with a large window overlooking the pools, weight training and activity rooms, a cafeteria with independent access from the outside and semi-basement parking with 80 spaces, some for people with reduced mobility and others for electric vehicles with charging option, as well as a parking area for motorcycles and bicycles.

Located behind the Guaguas Station on a plot of approximately 10,000 square meters intended for public equipment, the Playa Blanca Sports Hall will also have outside “an adjoining area with two 3x3 basketball courts, another artificial turf soccer 8 court and a recreation area with a playground and another for practicing 'street workout'.”

“We are very proud to be able to finance this infrastructure, so necessary and demanded by the residents, with our own resources. The good economic management that we have been carrying out, and that has just been corroborated once again by the annual audit carried out by the Government of the Canary Islands on the municipal accounts, bears fruit and has an impact, as it should, on the well-being of the citizens of Yaiza,” concludes Óscar Noda.
