The Sociocultural Center of La Graciosa hosted this Tuesday a meeting between the Cabildo of Lanzarote, Puertos Canarios and the residents of the eighth island to learn about the situation of the preliminary draft of the port of Caleta de Sebo.

The Deputy Minister of Public Works of the Government of the Canary Islands, Francisco Javier González, accompanied by the Cabildo representative of Puertos Canarios and Vice President of the Island Corporation, Jacobo Medina, the councilors of Fisheries and Waters, Samuel Martín and Domingo Cejas, and the mayor of Teguise, Olivia Duque, moved there.

"The port of La Graciosa was desperately asking for a reform that would adapt the facility for both tourists and fishing professionals and the residents of the island," said the vice president and member of the board of directors of Puertos Canarios.

As the Deputy Minister explained at the neighborhood meeting, the project is currently "studying the possible alternatives." "It will also be necessary to request a study of the environmental impact of this project, since we are in the first six months of studying this important project," said the Deputy Minister, who also pointed out that a "defined project is expected in the months of April or May."

The future port of La Graciosa will have a facility that "increases the number of pontoons" and allows a "greater number of boats to dock safely and comfortably." "Some of the pontoons date back to the 90s, and an urgent intervention by Puertos Canarios is necessary," said González.

In addition, the docking of fishing vessels from the eighth island will be guaranteed. "The project will guarantee, above all, the work of the families who live from the fishing sector on the eighth island," said the Minister of Fisheries, Samuel Martín.

The residents of La Graciosa listened to the explanations of the technicians of Puertos Canarios and contributed some of the requests of the residents. In addition, the Deputy Minister has promised the residents to convene another meeting "when the transformation project of the Port of La Graciosa progresses."
