The PSOE of Lanzarote has announced the celebration of a debate on the future of the island's tourism model, under the slogan Towards a Fair, Social and Sustainable Tourism Model. This event will feature the prominent presence of Francina Armengol, general secretary of the PSOE of the Balearic Islands and former president of the Balearic Government, who will share her experience in managing a more balanced and sustainable tourism model in the Balearic archipelago, which has a Tourism Law with pioneering measures in environmental sustainability and labor rights.
The conversation will address key debates such as the culture of limits, a necessary reflection to guarantee a balance between economic activity and environmental conservation; vacation rentals, a crucial debate given the housing crisis in Lanzarote; the implementation and benefits of the ecotax, a measure proposed by the socialists for Lanzarote that seeks to equitably redistribute tourism revenue to improve the sustainability of the territories; as well as the tourism moratorium, a key policy that was one of the PSOE's commitments during the last legislature. Under the Presidency of María Dolores Corujo, Lanzarote was a pioneer in opening the debate by declaring the island as a saturated tourist territory, setting a precedent for a new model of sustainable development.
The general secretary of the PSOE in Lanzarote and Deputy in Congress, María Dolores Corujo, has highlighted the importance of this event, stating: "It is vital that from Lanzarote we move towards a tourism that not only generates income, but is sustainable over time, respectful of our environment and beneficial for all citizens. Having the vision of Francina Armengol, who has led important tourism reforms in the Balearic Islands, is a unique opportunity for us to reflect and be inspired by her experience."
This meeting is open to the public and the participation of representatives from the tourism sector, environmentalists, economists and the Lanzarote society in general is expected, with the aim of generating a constructive debate on how to manage tourism in a way that is compatible with social well-being and respect for the natural environment of Lanzarote.
It will take place in the Sala El Fondeadero of Puerto del Carmen next Tuesday, October 1st at 8:00 p.m.
