The Lanzarote socialists denounce the existing paralysis regarding the Lanzarote Congress Palace project. From the PSOE they recall that the president of the Cabildo, Oswaldo Betancort, announced in 2024 the start of procedures to promote this strategic infrastructure without, two years later, "there being material execution, a defined calendar, or relevant administrative news".

The general secretary of the PSOE of Lanzarote and deputy in Congress, María Dolores Corujo, has pointed out that the people of Lanzarote “have been listening to promises about this infrastructure for too many years without real progress being made”.

“Historically, a constant expectation has been generated around the Congress Palace while the reality is that the project did not even meet the basic conditions to be executed. There have been announcements and photographs to bore and to tire, but not a single solution,” he affirmed.

Corujo recalled that, when the PSOE assumed the presidency of the Cabildo de Lanzarote, the project was completely blocked.

“When we arrived at the government we found that there was no land available to develop the Congress Palace. That was the true situation after decades of announcements. That's why our government declared the project of insular interest, an essential step to update it and make it viable from the administrative point of view”, he explained.

According to the PSOE, that decision allowed to unblock a file paralyzed for years and lay the foundations for the island to be able to advance towards a key infrastructure for economic diversification and the attraction of congress events.

However, the socialists denounce that, after the arrival of the new island government presided over by Oswaldo Betancort, the project has once again been paralyzed.

“Two years after the announcement made by the current president of the Cabildo, there is no tangible progress. Neither tender, nor execution, nor clear planning. Only headlines,” Corujo pointed out.

From the PSOE they also recall that Coalición Canaria has governed Canarias for much of the last thirty years, a period in which Lanzarote has continued to be at the bottom in strategic infrastructures despite its tourist and economic weight. “What is worrying is not only this specific project, but a political model based on constantly announcing what never ends up becoming a reality,” added the socialist leader.

In this regard, the PSOE criticizes that the current island government has not been able to promote new infrastructures nor significant advances in priority areas for the island, pointing out the absence of relevant investments in roads, the stagnation of the public housing stock, reactivated by the previous socialist government after decades “without a block being placed on the island”.
