The island secretary of the party and deputy in Congress, María Dolores Corujo, highlighted that “May Day is a day to recognize the achievements conquered thanks to the effort of the labor movement, but also to remember that there is still a long way to go to achieve decent, stable and safe working conditions for everyone”.
The PSOE of Lanzarote celebrates that in recent times important advances have been achieved, such as the increase in the minimum interprofessional wage (SMI) and the improvement of labor rights, as a result of social dialogue and political commitment. However, Corujo warned that “the Canary Islands continues to drag unemployment and precariousness rates much higher than the national average, especially in strategic sectors such as hospitality, where it is urgent to dignify working conditions”.
In this sense, she recalled that the PSOE of Lanzarote has shown its support for the demands of the hospitality sector, recently promoted by the workers on strike to demand decent conditions. “There cannot be record occupancy rates, historical business profits and, at the same time, poor workers. It is a matter of social justice. The wealth generated by tourism must have an impact on those who sustain the model with their daily efforts”, Corujo stressed.
The socialist leader also warned that Lanzarote "is experiencing a situation of tourist saturation that aggravates the problems of access to housing, pressure on basic services and loss of quality of life for the resident population." “Faced with those who only think about continuing to grow without limit, the PSOE defends labor dignity, sustainability and the fair distribution of wealth”, she concluded.
