The PSOE of Lanzarote has shown this Wednesday its support for the decision of the Government of Spain to toughen the criteria for the creation of private universities, a measure announced by President Pedro Sánchez that will be processed urgently by the Council of Ministers.

The insular secretary of Education and Universities of the PSOE of Lanzarote, Pepa González, has positively valued this initiative, which will reform the royal decree of 2021 to guarantee that both public and private universities meet demanding quality standards. “Higher education cannot become a business at the expense of the prestige of our university system or a vending machine for degrees,” said González.

In this sense, she points out that enrollments in private universities in the Canary Islands have increased by 713% in five years, according to data published by the Canary Islands Institute of Statistics (Istac). A fact that contrasts with the situation of the public universities of the Canary Islands, which are agonizing due to lack of funding.

“The president has been clear: we must put an end to the educational chiringuitos that degrade the value of a university degree. From Lanzarote we share that vision. The university must be a space for rigorous training, where professionals are prepared to take care of our health, our safety and our future as a society,” she added.

The PSOE of Lanzarote insists that this reform is a guarantee for families who make great efforts to give their sons and daughters a quality education, and a protection against those models that seek economic benefit above the value of knowledge.

“This measure of the Government of Pedro Sánchez is one more step in the defense of the university as a social elevator and as a guarantor of equal opportunities,” concluded Pepa González.
