The PSOE of Arrecife has denounced the expenditure made by the municipal government in the celebration of the Arrecife Carnival 2026, which amounts to 1,533,511.43 euros. According to the socialists, it is an “astronomical” figure for festivities that, they assure, have been described by groups and residents as the worst remembered in the city.
As of today, the expenditure exceeds one and a half million euros, an amount that, in the opinion of the PSOE, is difficult to justify based on the result of the programming and the organization of the events. “Never has a party disaster been so expensive,” points out Cristina Duque.
The party also criticizes the management of the mayor, Yonathan de León, to which it attributes “lack of planning”, “improvisation” and “disregard” towards the carnival groups, which it considers the historical engine of these celebrations. According to them, these groups have denounced “constant lies” and lack of coordination on the part of the City Council.
From the PSOE they maintain that the governing group “has an enormous ability to burn money”, and question the destination of the expenditure. “Nobody understands how more than 1.5 million euros can be spent on a carnival that has been marked by disorganization, logistical problems, and a lack of respect towards those who truly uphold this tradition”, states Duque.
With this new disbursement, the socialists assure that the Arrecife City Council reaches 29 million euros destined for parties so far this legislature, a figure they consider unjustifiable given the city's needs in public services, infrastructures, and social policies.
“The residents of Arrecife deserve respect. Public money cannot continue to be spent without control, and even less so by a mayor investigated by the prosecutor's office, while the city has much more urgent problems to address”, concludes Cristina Duque.
