"There is an evident poor quality of these services in dirty sidewalks, overflowing trash cans, containers in poor condition and lack of maintenance, along with unpleasant odors," said the councilor of the Socialist Group, Alfredo Mendoza

The Socialist Group of the Arrecife City Council will request in the next plenary session this Friday that the cleaning and solid waste collection service be recovered and put an end to the "disaster and unsanitary situations that the residents of the neighborhoods" of Arrecife are enduring.

The spokesperson and councilor of the Socialist Group, Alfredo Mendoza, has indicated that “street cleaning and the collection of urban solid waste in Arrecife are reasons for growing concern among our residents. The evident poor quality of these services is suffered daily in dirty sidewalks, overflowing trash cans, containers in poor condition and lack of maintenance, along with unpleasant odors.”

"78 million euros, a precarious service"

“The waste management contract in our city represents a significant investment, approximately 78 million euros in total and about 400,000 euros per month, a more than considerable amount to be suffering a deficient service. The growing lack of workers in the Arrecife cleaning service is directly related to the deterioration of the quality of these services, which translates into an increasingly dirty city. It is the duty of the city council to ensure compliance with the contract by the concessionaire company and carry out an exhaustive audit and quality monitoring and control to assess the degree of compliance with the contractual obligations by the concessionaire company,” adds Mendoza.

“In addition, it has been observed that the collection trucks are in a deplorable state and, on occasions, we have witnessed workers and vehicles of the company providing service in other municipalities while Arrecife suffers the consequences of the lack of personnel and maintenance,” continues the councilor. In this same sense, the socialist spokesperson points out that “it is clear that in a contract with this economic volume, the sanctions are not sufficient, compared to the company's savings in resources and employees.”

“A city like Arrecife needs a service that meets the needs, a service that also has a direct impact on the quality of life of those of us who live here,” he concluded.
