The MEP and PSOE candidate from the Canary Islands to the European Parliament in the elections of June 9, Juan Fernando López Aguilar, visited the two municipalities of Teror and Gáldar in Gran Canaria this Sunday, where he described the development of this electoral campaign as a "decisive moment" and how the Socialist Party is marking the "difference" in the message conveyed to citizens about the importance of what is at stake in these elections. “We are talking about Europe. There are political parties that are not dedicating a single word to explaining to citizens what is at stake, which is a social Europe or a devolution in rights and freedoms.”
López Aguilar warned that "there is only one week left" to "be voting" for the European Parliament, and that the socialists are "absolutely clear" that the election is "decisive." “Either you vote for a united Europe, a social Europe, a Europe with rights and freedoms, a Europe with stable jobs, with fair wages and decent working conditions and with a strong social pillar, which is capable of making a difference in the globalized world, particularly in the African continent, or you vote for a weakened Europe and a Europe in involution.”
“The other option is a Europe in retreat of rights, an irrelevant and inane Europe, which is the Europe to which the right allied with the extreme right would lead us, who want to burst it from within. Therefore, the choice is very clear,” he added.
For the MEP, the PSOE is instead addressing all those who believe that Europe “has improved us, that Europe complements our citizenship as Canarians, and as Spaniards, and that Europe continues to be promising.”
In this sense, he stressed the importance that the message about a Europe "cohesive and guarantor of solidarity, and particularly of an agricultural policy that guarantees the sustainability and profitability of the agri-food sector" has in the "agricultural regions and the north of the Canary Islands", which is not incompatible with the green Europe, about which he affirmed that it is "absolutely unavoidable."
For the socialist candidate, a decarbonized economy "is not only not in contradiction with the support of agricultural and livestock producers and the fishing sector", but on the contrary, "it is absolutely an essential condition so that we can guarantee the sustainability of the primary sector.”
“Because, otherwise, in a Europe devastated by global warming, in a Europe that is not capable of decarbonizing its economy, there will be no future. And that is a relevant message for young people, who are also called to vote in this ballot box on June 9.”
