The PSOE of Lanzarote demands that the Cabildo act urgently to improve the selective collection of waste on the island

The Socialist Group in the Cabildo of Lanzarote, through its spokesperson, Ariagona González, has denounced that the selective waste collection service on the island has reached unsustainable levels of deterioration, with containers overflowing and surrounded by garbage in numerous parts of the island. Given this situation, the PSOE demands that the island government take urgent measures to guarantee an efficient service in accordance with the environmental values that define Lanzarote as a Biosphere Reserve.

“The situation is unacceptable. The waste accumulated around the containers not only gives a deplorable image, but also seriously affects the quality of life of citizens and puts at risk the environmental commitment of the island. It is evident that the Cabildo's management in this area has failed and that citizens are paying the consequences of this inefficiency,” said Ariagona González.

Since September 2024, the selective waste collection service has been deteriorating to reach this critical point, with constant complaints from various municipalities about the lack of cleanliness and the accumulation of garbage. Despite the fact that the responsibility lies directly with the Cabildo of Lanzarote, which manages the service through a concessionary company, no measures have been taken to correct this alarming situation.

“The island government cannot continue to look the other way while the municipalities and residents deal with this chaos. The image of overflowing containers and scattered garbage not only affects the environmental sustainability of the island, but also jeopardizes the effort of citizens to recycle and care for our environment. The incompetence of the Cabildo is leading Lanzarote to a situation of shame and abandonment,” added González.

The PSOE has presented a motion in the plenary session of the Cabildo to demand the urgent recovery of quality standards in the selective collection of waste. In the proposal, the socialists emphasize that not only is the cleanliness of the island at stake, but also its reputation as a destination committed to sustainability and the environment.

“The government of Oswaldo Betancort must assume its responsibility and guarantee a decent service for Lanzarote. We cannot tolerate more excuses or delays. Waste collection is a basic competence, and its current state is a reflection of deficient management that must change immediately,” concluded González.
