The Municipal Group of the PSOE in the Arrecife City Council has "exploded" after a new closure to bathing was decreed at El Reducto beach due to fecal contamination. For the socialists, "the situation has gone from being negligence to becoming a real ridicule led by the most incompetent and party-loving mayor in history: Yonathan de León".
"The level of shamelessness of this government group knows no bounds," the socialist councilor Cristina Duque has bluntly denounced. "Just yesterday the mayor was walking on the sand taking photos to show off the new sunbeds, and today the beach wakes up sealed off for continuing to dump fecal contamination into the sea. Are they going to take an official photo with the red flag of contamination today too?", Cristina Duque has ironically asked.
The PSOE recalls that this new setback adds to a black history caused by municipal inaction: five and a half months of continuous closure between the end of 2025 and Easter 2026, added to 10 days of closure in the middle of summer for multiplying fecal bacteria limits by twelve.
The party points out that "this data shows an unsustainable reality: from the first major closure on October 14, 2025, to the present day, El Reducto beach has been closed more than open. In total, the sandy area has remained closed for 179 days compared to the meager 165 days in which bathing has been allowed." "It is a real shame that the main beach of Arrecife has been sealed off for more than half the time due to the incompetence of a mayor who prefers to spend the budget on parties rather than fixing the pipes that are rotting our coast. All that's left is for us to organize an afternoon gathering in the middle of the E. coli so that the government group feels at home," concludes the socialist councilor.
It should be remembered that this beach is a tourist attraction, but also a relief for the citizens of the capital who use it as a place for leisure and enjoyment.
"Nobody governs in Arrecife. The mayor is only there for posturing, squandering on parties, revelries, and superficial fixes, while preventing bathing at the contaminated beach to safeguard the health of residents and tourists. Not to mention the reputational damage, every tourist who comes to the city in the middle of a heatwave sees that they cannot swim because the main beach and postcard of the city is unusable," adds Duque.
