The PSOE of Lanzarote has demanded that the Government of the Canary Islands rectify and reinstate the Lanzarote geriatrician Elisa Corujo to the head of the Canary Islands Guarantee and Evaluation Commission for the Provision of Aid in Dying, after the Ministry of Health agreed to her dismissal without specifying, according to the doctor herself in the appeal filed, the facts that would justify her alleged inability to hold the position.
The general secretary of the PSOE of Lanzarote and deputy in Congress, María Dolores Corujo, has considered “unacceptable” the way in which a decision affecting a professional of recognized prestige and the presidency of a body that must exercise its functions with "autonomy, independence of judgment and rigor" has been adopted.
“CC has turned Canary Islands healthcare into a fiefdom where orders and commands prevail. We are not talking about a political position, but about a doctor specializing in Geriatrics and the head of a guarantee body that must precisely ensure independence to be able to carry out its functions,” Corujo stated.
The dismissal was agreed upon last September 14 by the Minister of Health, Esther Monzón, at the proposal of the director of the Canary Islands Health Service, Adasat Goya. The resolution alludes to an alleged “impossibility to exercise her functions,” but Elisa Corujo maintains in her appeal that it does not specify what incapacity would exist or what functions she would have stopped performing, which is why she requests the annulment of the decision and her reinstatement in the position.
María Dolores Corujo has pointed out that “the least that can be demanded of a public administration when it adopts a decision of this nature is that it be motivated with absolute clarity and transparency. A professional cannot be removed from a responsibility of these characteristics with a generic formula and expect no explanations.”
The socialist leader also recalled that Elisa Corujo is a specialist in Geriatrics at the Doctor José Molina Orosa University Hospital, also chairs the Lanzarote Healthcare Ethics Committee, and had assumed the presidency of the regional commission in October 2025.
“They entertain themselves creating new problems”
Corujo has contrasted this action with the situation facing public healthcare in Lanzarote. The latest available data show 4,754 people awaiting a specialist consultation at the Molina Orosa Hospital and 1,866 awaiting surgical intervention, the worst figure since 2019.
“We have thousands of Lanzaroteans waiting for a specialist or an operation and, instead of concentrating all their efforts on solving these problems, the Canary Islands Health Service is busy creating new ones. What we need is management, resources, and supported professionals, not unexplained decisions that generate more conflicts within the healthcare system,” she stated.
Corujo has called on the Ministry of Health to provide public explanations for the specific reasons behind the dismissal and, in the absence of a sufficiently explicit motivation in the resolution questioned by the doctor, to reconsider the decision.
“Public healthcare cannot be managed arbitrarily or by command and control. When there are such serious problems to solve, the Government of the Canary Islands should be dedicating its efforts to reducing waiting lists, improving healthcare, and strengthening its professionals, not to opening fronts that no one understands,” concluded María Dolores Corujo.
