The deputy for Lanzarote and spokesperson in Teguise, Marcos Bergaz (PSOE), demands solutions in the face of the "setback" suffered in the claimed reform and expansion of the Nuestra Señora de los Volcanes Special Education Center, in Tahíche, after the Canary Islands Government's Department of Education withdrew, on August 17, from the tender to draft the project.
The tender, announced by the department headed by Poli Suárez (PP) last March with a budget of 219,898.43 euros, remained suspended since then pending the resolution of urban planning issues related to the action. Five months later, the procedure has ended in withdrawal, rendering ineffective the contract that was supposed to allow progress on the reform and expansion project of the center.
In view of the legal report from the Teguise City Council, dated June 25, 2026, Education considers that the existing building is in a situation of being out of compliance with zoning regulations, which limits works to conservation and maintenance. For this reason, it concludes that "it is entirely impossible to approve the project in question as proposed" and renders the tender ineffective.
Faced with this scenario, Bergaz calls for the involved administrations to "work together to find solutions that overcome the urban planning obstacles and resume an action that he considers necessary for Lanzarote".
“Since March, we expected this tender to allow progress in the expansion of the center, and now we are facing a setback. What we demand is that no more time be lost and that the involved administrations work together to find a solution and definitively unblock the action,” he states.
The PSOE recalls that the Nuestra Señora de los Volcanes Special Education Center, located in Tahíche, is the only special education center in Lanzarote and serves students and families from all over the island. Therefore, it argues that the expansion and modernization of its facilities must remain a priority.
“We are talking about a real need. The center needs more space, better facilities, and adequate resources to serve the students. The needs exist and continue to grow. That is why we demand that solutions be sought to make the expansion a reality,” affirms Bergaz.
The planned action contemplates expanding the center to reach 100 educational places, with a significant increase in its surface area, new specialized classrooms, and spaces adapted to the educational and therapeutic needs of the students, in addition to a comprehensive modernization of the facilities.
Precisely, during the meeting that Bergaz recently held at the Parliament of the Canary Islands with the Director General of Infrastructure and Equipment, Iván G. Carro, both parties were awaiting the latest report from the Teguise City Council on the urban planning situation of the action. Finally, that report has confirmed the difficulties that have led Education to withdraw from the tender.
Given this situation, the PSOE of Teguise, as the majority group in the City Council, makes itself available to agree on and promote the necessary measures to unblock the expansion, whether through a specific modification of the General Plan, a project of insular interest, or any other viable legal and urbanistic alternative.
“We demand solutions and that no more time be lost. We are here to contribute and collaborate in everything necessary, but also to demand that this expansion, which Lanzarote needs, becomes a reality as soon as possible,” concludes Bergaz.
