The PSOE MEP for the Canary Islands in the European Elections on June 9, Juan Fernando López Aguilar, highlighted on Monday, May 20, the singularities of the island of La Graciosa, which make it an "environmental benchmark" for the rest of Europe, which also requires a "differentiated treatment" from the European Union.
López Aguilar, who visited Lanzarote and La Graciosa together with public and organic representatives of the PSOE in the Canary Islands, described La Graciosa as "one of the greatest expressions of diversity within the European territory." "It is a treasure that should be preserved, for all that it represents in sustainability, the environment, the just green transition, and the preservation of what really matters to us."
The socialist candidate called on the citizens of Lanzarote and La Graciosa to go to the polls on June 9 for the elections to the European Parliament, and thereby defend "what matters to us." "La Graciosa matters to us, of course, sustainability, the air we breathe, the restoration of nature. It matters to us that growth is sustainable, equitable and fairly distributed."
In this sense, he recalled that the Socialist Party advocates for a social Europe, "which compensates for inequalities at the origin and which contemplates the difficulty of certain territories in accessing the freedoms that structure European citizenship, such as La Graciosa."
"Here there are 700 people registered, all of them full-fledged Europeans, European citizens who can go to vote on June 9 to the European Parliament. We are campaigning everywhere so that the entire European Union, made up of 27 member states and 450 million people, knows that La Graciosa is fully European, and that it also requires its differentiated treatment," he added.
The socialist deputy cited this island as an example of "sustainability and balance in the ordering of growth" with respect to the environment. "To achieve the balance that we have to maintain, we must take care of what matters most to us, and here, where everyone has known each other forever, it is very important to remember that what allows us to live together is mutual respect, that we cannot erode democratic coexistence. And we have to defend all that by voting at the polls," he urged.
For López Aguilar, the socialists will always defend from Europe the "singularities of Lanzarote and La Graciosa", so he encourages voting on June 9. "I commit to being your representative, to defend this singularity that is such a precious treasure, for the Canary Islands and the rest of Spain in the European Union."
