The Socialist Group in the Arrecife City Council has denounced the situation of "abandonment in which the theme park and the maritime avenue of the capital are, more than a month after the start of the assembly of the controversial million-euro concert, which began around August 10."
According to the socialist councilor Roy González, “what was going to be a specific show has ended up leaving a permanent mark of neglect and abandonment in two of the most emblematic and frequented spaces in our city.”
The stage has not yet been dismantled, occupying the park and directly affecting leisure and sports areas. One of the most affected points has been the skatepark track, completely "destroyed and unusable since then."
“Citizens have not only lost the possibility of enjoying the promenade and a park that should be open to family and sports recreation, but the only skate park in Arrecife has also been destroyed, a vital space for dozens of young people who practice this discipline daily, recognized as an Olympic sport. We cannot forget that in March 2021, the City Council Plenary unanimously approved declaring sport as an essential activity for the city. However, Mayor Yonathan de León has decided to ignore that agreement, relegating physical activity and sport to the background, prioritizing parties again over the real needs of the citizens,” González denounced.
The socialist councilor has also criticized the state of the sports area of the beach, where the goals used by clubs and young people have been lying on one side of the Punta del Camello promenade for weeks. “But it doesn't end there. As of today, and for the same reason, it is still not possible to use the goals that were installed on the beach, a space that served as a relief for many sports clubs and young people given the serious lack of sports facilities in our city. Those goals have been lying on the side of the Punta del Camello promenade for weeks, an image that clearly reflects the abandonment and lack of commitment of the mayor to sports and youth in Arrecife,” he explained.
“It is unacceptable that millionaire figures are spent on specific events while the few spaces we have for healthy leisure and sports are deteriorating and destroyed. Arrecife does not need more parties that leave garbage and abandoned structures, it needs respect for its public spaces and a real commitment to sports and youth,” concluded Roy González.
