The Socialist Party (PSOE) of Teguise has achieved in this Thursday's ordinary plenary session the unanimous support of the corporation for its motion to raise the amount of aid for study for the 2026/2027 academic year.
Currently, these grants —mainly intended to cover students' transport costs— amount to 600 euros for those studying outside the autonomous community, 500 euros for those doing so on other Canary Islands, and 150 euros for those studying on the island. Amounts that, as was recognized in the plenary session, remain “frozen” since 2022.
For socialists, the right to education, contained in Article 27 of the Spanish Constitution, must guarantee that all people can be educated in equal opportunities, eliminating the obstacles that hinder their access.
In this regard, they emphasize that scholarship and aid policies constitute a fundamental pillar to guarantee this equality, especially in territories like Lanzarote and La Graciosa, where the more limited educational offer forces many young people to move outside the island to continue their education.
This reality entails a significant economic effort for families, who must face transport, accommodation, and subsistence costs, in many cases thanks to the support of state, regional, and local scholarships and aid.
The socialist motion seeks that the Teguise City Council takes a step forward and updates these aids, joining the effort of other municipalities on the island that already offer higher amounts to facilitate the training of young people.
The socialist spokesperson, Marcos Bergaz, pointed out that “we will be ‘on the lookout’ for the governing group to process the modification of the bases that regulate these aids, so that in the call for the 2026/2027 academic year their amounts are increased, while we trust that the aids for the current academic year are paid as soon as possible”.
Bergaz also highlighted that “the effort that families make must have the support of all administrations, from local to state, so that our youth can be educated, even more so on islands with a more limited higher educational offer.”
Likewise, he/she/it recalled that state investment in scholarships has experienced a notable increase in recent years, going from 1,525 million euros in 2018 to 2,544 million in 2025, which, in his/her/its opinion, reflects “a clear commitment to equal opportunities”.
“It is a fundamental investment in the education and training of the new generations, of young people who are preparing to face the future with greater professional, employment, and life opportunities,” he/she added.
Finally, the approved motion includes as an agreement, subscribed by the entire plenary, the modification of the bases that regulate the known as transport aid with the objective of increasing their amounts next course in accordance with the current economic situation and the real needs of the families of the municipality.
