During the plenary session this Thursday, the councilor and socialist spokesperson in the Island Council, Ariagona González, reminded Oswaldo Betancort, president of the Cabildo of Lanzarote, that "the largest increase in the number of vacation homes has occurred precisely during his first ten months in office, contrary to what Betancort falsely stated during the previous plenary session."

Likewise, González reproached Oswaldo Betancort for "his lack of rigor and his lies about vacation rentals."

"According to data from the Government of the Canary Islands, from June 2023 to April 2024, coinciding with his presidency, 2,693 homes have been incorporated into the vacation market in Lanzarote," explained González, who highlighted that this increase represents a 52% growth compared to the previous figure, being the largest increase that has occurred in all of the Canary Islands.

The councilor reproached Betancort for "his constant resort to lies when he tries to blame this brutal growth on the previous corporation or the mayors of various municipalities and demanded that he stop lying, because the authorizations for vacation rentals are not given by the Cabildo or the town halls."

«To register a vacation home, thanks to the decree of the Government of Paulino Rivero, it is enough to register electronically in the Registry of the Ministry of Tourism», he explained.

"We are not going to lie, like you, attributing a responsibility that does not correspond to you. What is your responsibility is to have contributed to the saturation of Lanzarote by authorizing two new hotels and an apartment complex," he stated.
