The mayor of Arrecife, Yonathan de León (Popular Party), clarified this Friday morning before the media some points about the complaint filed with the Prosecutor's Office upon finding possible irregularities in the annulment of traffic fines between 2016 to the present.

De León has assured that he became aware in September 2025 that from the city council traffic fines would have been being eliminated in a presumably irregular manner. After receiving this information, he requested reports from the Local Police, from the Infractions area and also from the company awarded the fine service.

"It is detected that there are more than 2,000 annulled fines," the mayor of Arrecife has informed this Friday. According to what La Voz advanced this Thursday and the mayor has confirmed this Friday, there are seven municipal workers who are being investigated by the Public Prosecutor's Office for these facts, who are the employees responsible for the fine application.

The amount of the sanctions amounts up to 570,000 euros that would not have entered the public coffers.

According to the mayor of Arrecife, the Prosecutor's Office requested access to the file and detected that there could be a possible embezzlement of public funds and would have filed a complaint against the officials.

"I will have to go as a witness because I have been the one who alerted the Prosecutor's Office about what was happening," the leader highlighted.
